A deep borehole for a whole village, in Niger
Niger is one of the countries in the world where access to drinking water is hardest. On the edge of the Sahara, the rainy season lasts only three months, and in many villages the water table lies tens of metres below ground: a hand-dug well is not enough, you have to drill.
Without a water point in the village, it is the women and children who walk, sometimes several kilometres, to a pond or a well shared with livestock. The water they bring back is scarce, often unsafe, and the days spent fetching it are hours lost for school and work.
That is why the Niger well is our most important structure: a deep borehole, fitted with a storage tank, serving a whole village and not a single hamlet.

What we’re telling you with complete transparency
- When the water table is too deep or the soil is rocky? The shallow well is therefore no longer suitable, so our teams are steering the project toward a deep borehole.
- A filter to monitor. Over the years, the strainer may become clogged; simple, low-cost local maintenance is provided for this purpose.

Beneath the pump lies a true feat of engineering: drilled down to the aquifer, filtered from the moment it is drawn, and built to serve for years.

The strainer: the filter that makes water clear
At the very end of the casing, a filter point does the sorting: groundwater flows in freely, while sand and particles stay out. The result — clear water from the very first buckets, without waiting for it to “settle.”
Piling: driving into the ground until the water table
A massive drill bit, suspended from a cable, is hoisted and then released rhythmically. Each impact fractures the ground, and the casing descends meter after meter until it reaches the water. The go-to method for hard ground.
Water jet drilling: drilling with pressure
Water injected under pressure at the bottom of the borehole loosens the soil as it goes: the casing then slides section by section, almost effortlessly. The fastest method for loose to compact ground.
Caisson sinking: the large-diameter shaft that sinks by itself
A large casing ring is placed on the ground, and excavation takes place inside it: under its own weight, it sinks as the soil is removed from beneath it. This is the technique used for large-diameter wells, designed for community use, with openings of up to several meters across.
Before delivery to the village: flow rate and drinkability are tested, the sign bearing your name is put up, and your video is filmed on-site.

Site survey and location scouting
Before the first shovel breaks ground, our teams study the terrain: the local geology is analyzed to locate the most promising aquifer, and the site is chosen to remain accessible to families and drilling equipment alike.
Casing preparation
The well casing is assembled: a thick steel or PVC cylinder designed to withstand the pressure of the surrounding ground. It is what will ensure the stability of the structure, from construction through years of use.
Installation of the casing pipe
The casing is set upright, exactly over the marked point. It will serve as a guide for the entire excavation: the shaft descends perfectly straight, with no risk of collapse.
Initial digging
Inside the pipe, excavation begins—using hand tools or mechanized equipment, depending on the soil. These first meters initiate the descent of the casing toward the water table.
Depth control
Meter by meter, the depth is measured and the terrain analyzed. We stop only once the groundwater table is reached—with a sufficient flow rate and high-quality water.
Progressive descent
As drilling progresses, the weight of the casing naturally makes it slide downward. The walls remain supported at all times: no risk of collapse, and a perfectly controlled descent.
Removal of excavated material
Inside the tube, soil and rubble are regularly removed—by hand or by machine. A clear borehole allows the casing to continue descending without force.
Well commissioning
Once the target depth is reached, the casing remains in place and becomes the well’s permanent structure. The well is sealed and secured to protect the water from contamination, the pump is installed—and the sign bearing your name is put up.
