Eid al-Adha is the greatest celebration of the Muslim year. It commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim and revolves around one act: the sacrifice of an animal, called udhiyah in Arabic, Qurbani in the English-speaking world and Kurban in Turkey and Germany. Here is everything you need to know for 2027.

When is Eid al-Adha 2027?

Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. In 2027 it is expected on Sunday 16 or Monday 17 May 2027, depending on the sighting of the moon. The exact date is confirmed a few days beforehand by the religious authorities of each country.

The day of Eid is preceded by the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah), whose fast expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year (Muslim). The sacrifice may be carried out on the day of Eid and the three following days (the days of Tashreeq).

Who must give Qurbani?

The sacrifice is a strongly recommended Sunnah for every adult Muslim who can afford it (obligatory according to the Hanafi school). A single sheep is enough for a whole household; a cow or a camel can be shared in seven shares.

“The son of Adam does no deed on the day of sacrifice more beloved to Allah than shedding blood.”

At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah.

The rules of the Eid sacrifice

  • The animal: a sheep at least six months old (if well developed) or one year, a goat of one year, cattle of two years, a camel of five years.
  • Free of defects: not lame, one-eyed, sick or emaciated.
  • The timing: after the Eid prayer, until sunset on 13 Dhul Hijjah.
  • The sharing: it is recommended to eat some, give some as gifts and give some to the poor; a third each is the most common practice.
  • The intention: the sacrifice is made in the name of a person or a household; a deceased person may be included.

How much does a Qurbani sheep cost?

In the UK and France, a sheep for Eid generally costs between £200 and £400, slaughter included, with queues at the abattoir and meat that often ends up in the freezer. In Bangladesh, India or Niger, the same sacrifice costs far less and its meat is distributed to families who eat it only once or twice a year.

Qurbani abroad: is it valid?

Yes. Sacrifice by proxy is permitted: the Prophet ﷺ delegated part of his sacrifices to 'Ali at Mina, and he himself sacrificed on behalf of his community. Contemporary scholars allow entrusting one's sacrifice to an organisation that carries it out in another country, provided the sacrifice is done within the prescribed days and according to the rules.

With Sanabil, your sheep is sacrificed in your name, on the day of Eid or the days of Tashreeq, by Sanabil, on the ground. The meat is distributed to families in need, and you receive the video on WhatsApp. A share of beef (one seventh) is also offered for tighter budgets.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Eid sacrifice be made in the name of a deceased person?

Yes. You may include a deceased person in your own sacrifice, or sacrifice specifically in their name; the reward reaches them according to the majority of scholars.

Do I have to be present when the animal is sacrificed?

It is recommended if you sacrifice yourself, but it is not a condition. Delegating to a third party is permitted, even in another country.

Is Qurbani abroad done on the right day?

Yes. We sacrifice on the day of Eid or during the days of Tashreeq, according to the date of Eid in the country where it is carried out.

What is the difference between Qurbani, Udhiyah and Kurban?

None in substance: they are the names of the same Eid al-Adha sacrifice in Arabic (udhiyah), in Urdu and English (Qurbani), in Turkish and German (Kurban).

Can a child's Aqiqah be done on the day of Eid?

Yes, they are two separate sacrifices that can be carried out on the same day, with two different animals. See our guide to the Aqiqah.
