“Planting a tree in Islam”: the question comes up often, and the answer from the texts is surprisingly clear. Planting is charity, and a charity that lasts. A tree is planted only once; then it gives, season after season, for twenty or thirty years. It is probably the simplest Sadaqah Jariyah to set up, and one of the most lasting.
What the hadith says about planting a tree
“There is no Muslim who plants a tree or sows a crop, and then a bird, a person or an animal eats from it, without it being counted as charity for him.”
Al-Bukhari (no. 2320), Muslim (no. 1553), from Anas ibn Malik.
In another version reported by Muslim: “… without it being charity for him until the Day of Resurrection.” And the Prophet ﷺ said: “If the Hour comes while one of you has a seedling in his hand, let him plant it if he can.” (Ahmad). Every fruit picked, every bird fed, every patch of shade: it all counts.
Why a fruit tree changes a family's life
